The Beach
I've been to the beach twice since I've been here. Randomly one night with one of my flatmates and two of her friends. We couldn't see very much as it was very dark, but it was fun a fun walk and a fun way to get to know that flatmate better. The second time was on Wednesday of this week, we walked to the beach that is closer to downtown Aberdeen, it was beautiful. Sadly, I did not bring my camera, but we didn't stay for very long as it was quite windy.
The Weather
It has been absolutely gorgeous the past couple of days! I know that we are probably using up our entire sunshine quota for the duration of our stay in Scotland, but I didn't mind at all! It was in the 60s and 70s and sunny most of the week and last weekend.
Guinness at the Illicit Still
We went to the Illicit Still, a nice pub in downtown Aberdeen twice in the past week. The first time because we'd heard it was good. And it was, it has a really cool atmosphere, a little less student bar and a little more Scottish pub. There is a cool wine bottle ceiling art piece in one part of the pub, in which wine bottles (I'm assuming they are wine bottles, that's what they looked like anyway) are hanging down in rows. Very neat! I need to get a picture the next time we go. I also had a most excellent Guinness there. The second time we went was more by default, we'd been planning on having Indian food downtown but the place opened later than we thought it did and we were all starving, so we ended up heading back to the Illicit Still. Fish and Chips, also most excellent. I think the Illicit Still is my favorite pub so far.
Sticky Toffee Pudding at Cocoa
So delicious. We'd been walking around all day, around the uni's campus and then downtown and to the harbor, and so when we found this place Cocoa we decided to stop and have a pick-me-up. It was really excellent as was the coffee that we got.
Sideways iced coffee |
I have spent a few nights in Clubs since being here. Not normally my scene, especially since in the states I'm still under the legal drinking age. But I have to say, clubs can be fun. Despite the crowds, if a loud atmosphere with lots of dancing is what you want, then clubs can be a good place to go. I have to say though, it made me feel a little as though I were having an Alice in Wonderland moment. In one of the clubs, there were these women dressed in matching mini dresses, who I swear looked identical. I didn't even realize they were different people until I saw two of them at the same time. We nicknamed them the Fairy Shot Mothers, because they went from group to group offering shots for a pound (they taste like kool-aid that burns).
Rabbits
I'm pretty sure rabbits are the Scottish squirrel. In Chicago and on K's campus there are squirrels eeeeverywhere. Here, I have not seen a single squirrel. But I have seen a lot of rabbits, especially at night around our flat building. They are super cute!
The Castle and Whiskey Tour AND Stonehaven/Dunnotter Castle
These were definitely the biggest highlights of the week, but they deserve their own posts. So that's what's coming up next!
